What is

Transformational Breathwork?

Transformational Breathwork is a

Conscious Connected breathing

practice that helps to gain access

to the subconscious mind, release

trapped emotions and traumas, and

helps to rewire the brain.

A Breathwork session takes anywhere from an Hour and a Half to Two hours. These events usually take place at a local yoga studio, or at a private location. Even though there are some contraindications, breathwork is considered a very safe practice and a low risk therapy.

~Health Benefits~

  • Deep, controlled breathing can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing the impact of the body's stress response. This can lead to lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.

  • Mindful breathwork practices can enhance concentration and cognitive function. They help calm the mind, reduce mental chatter, and improve overall mental clarity. This is due to the process of Transient Hypofrontality that occurs during a more vigorous breathwork practice.

  • Breathwork can influence the limbic system, which is involved in emotions. Practices such as deep diaphragmatic breathing can contribute to a sense of calm, balance, and emotional stability.

  • Certain breathwork techniques, especially those focused on relaxation and calming the nervous system, can help improve the quality of sleep. Deep breathing can induce a state of relaxation conducive to restful sleep.

  • Regular breathwork exercises can strengthen the respiratory muscles, increase lung capacity, and improve overall respiratory function. This can be beneficial for individuals with respiratory conditions like asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

  • Deep, slow breathing has been associated with a reduction in blood pressure. This can contribute to cardiovascular health and lower the risk of heart-related issues.

  • Certain breathwork techniques, such as those emphasizing deep and rhythmic breathing, can boost oxygen levels in the body, potentially leading to increased energy and vitality.

  • Recent research shows that breathwork practices have a positive influence on the immune system. Stress reduction and improved overall health can contribute to better immune function.

  • Breathwork can be incorporated into pain management strategies. Techniques like focused breathing and visualization may help individuals cope with pain and discomfort.

  • Breathwork involves mindfulness and self-awareness. Practicing conscious breathing can help individuals connect with their bodies, emotions, and thoughts, fostering a greater sense of self-awareness.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • The effects of breathwork on body and brain are attributed to an interplay between the O2-CO2 balance, blood pH level, cortical blood flow, vagal nerve stimulation and neurotransmitter release.

Conscious Connected breathing is a form of controlled over-breathing, where we take in more air than we metabolically need, which removes too much carbon dioxide from the body, placing us into a state of temporary respiratory alkalosis (an increase in blood pH). This causes our blood vessels to narrow, temporarily decreasing blood circulation, including in the brain (a process also known as transient hypofrontality). However, the fascinating thing is over-breathing doesn’t just reduce total cerebral blood flow, it also changes the distribution of blood flow within the brain, with the hippocampus and the frontal, occipital, and parieto-occipital cortices all receiving reduced blood flow within seconds to minutes.

Through the combination of breathing and conscious awareness, participants are encouraged to immerse themselves in their current experience. More specifically, to uncover repressed memory to open psychophysiological defenses and to induce non-ordinary states of consciousness which have a therapeutic, transformative, evolutionary and heuristic potential.

  • A Breathwork session takes anywhere from an Hour and a Half to Two hours. These events usually take place at a local yoga studio, or at a private location. This style of breathwork involves circular connected breath with music or other acoustic stimuli, and the added element of coaching, with positive suggestions and affirmations often, but not always under a particular theme. Participants are positioned lying down and encouraged to express themselves freely, making any sounds or movements that arise throughout the session. The goal is for the individual to reach a level of safety that allows them to freely release any impulses or emotions they experience during the breathing exercises.

  • Certainly, breathwork is accessible to individuals of all ages, regardless of whether you're young or in your senior years. Nevertheless, if you have conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney or lung disease, severe panic attacks or other diagnosed mental health condition please seek advice from your doctor before engaging in breathwork. For those with asthma, it's important to have your inhaler handy during sessions, and if you're pregnant, it might be advisable to postpone participation until after the child is born.
